Fetishes, Serialization, and a sneak cover peek

Awesome readers, I'm about to try something new. Well, many new things, actually.

As a writer, I write about the things that fascinate me. A lot of both Teaching Maya and House of Pain is the exploration of what submission is, how someone becomes dominant & what a romantic relationship between someone who is dominant and someone who is submissive might look like.

But BDSM is not the only thing that fascinates me. Guilty confession: I'm fascinated by medical play. This particular fetish will remain entirely in the 'fantasy' category for me; if a real doctor touched me, I'd call the ethics committee so fast! But as a fantasy - it gets me going every single time.

What do you get if you combine medical play, with a safe, sane, consensual relationship?

Doctor Dom: Triage. 

Now, let's talk serialization. Both my editors promised they'd kill me if I didn't continue the story, so let's just say it ends on a cliff-hanger. And I know the reading world loves to hate on the serialization, but at the same time, serialization seems to work!

So far, both House of Pain and Teaching Maya have been complete books. Serialization is new for me, but it is supremely right for this story. Will readers love it? Hate it? I'll find out.

I'm having the greatest of fun writing her story - I had one uber-productive day where I wrote ~4000 words in three hours - which I can never do - so let's just say her story needs telling!

What I've been reading...

I read all the time, awesome readers. Here's what I've read in the last few months that's worth talking about... (surprise, surprise, it isn't all erotica...)

The Martian, by Andy Weir. It has ~1500 reviews on Amazon. It is fucking amazing. I've talked this book up to any and all around me who will listen; I love Andy's writing style; this book is entertaining and engaging; a nice, solid read that holds up.

The Unincorporated Man, by Dani Kollin, Etyan Kollin. Meh. It was ok. Nothing special; the most intriguing bit about the book is the premise; and there are too many scattered ideas here that don't really hold up. I did finish this book, but the last few pages, there was serious disinterest.

Songs of Submission, by CD Reiss. There's a long essay here somewhere, but between this and 50 Shades of Grey, this is so much the better book. There's an evenness and a balance in this relationship that the one between Christian and Ana never had. Christian Grey reminds me of the crazy jealous stalker, Jonathan Drazen, a protective lover. I loved every single book in this series. Well worth the read, if you haven't already.

What about you, awesome readers? Anything amazing I should be reading? I read erotica, sci-fi and fantasy, mostly, with occasional forays into other things.

Side note: I saw the Thor movie a few days ago; enjoyed it immensely. I mean, come on. The scene where Chris Hemsworth takes off his shirt? Well worth the price of admission. (I told my boyfriend that; he wasn't particularly amused.)

Dear readers, I have a cover.

So, for Teaching Maya and Chronicles of Raan, I went super low-budget in terms of a cover. I used the Cover Creator feature on the KDP store, found an image I liked, and added some text. Simple, easy, and not fancy. (Also, free.)

I think it shows.

For House of Pain, I thought I'd take a bit more effort. I looked online for romance covers, found a website I liked (http://www.goonwrite.com), and ordered a pre-made cover. The whole thing cost $40. James was amazingly fast as well, he had the finished cover ready for me in an hour.

Here it is. I'm in love with it, I really am.

42,300 words, and the House of Pain is done.

I am so stoked. Dear readers, I've been scribbling my entire life. But now, suddenly, through some magical combination of circumstances, I've actually finished two >40,000 word books? That really boggles my mind.

Now, a bit of boring stuff to do before the House of Pain goes up in the Kindle store. There's editing, there's a cover design to create, end-notes to write and a blurb.

Possibly, some marketing as well. So far, I've been pretty light on the marketing front, reasoning that I need a bit of a catalog of work before any serious marketing efforts. I'm not entirely sure if that's the right approach; we'll see. Pondering my options for the moment.

Right. So now both my stories have been rejected by Lit for the same reason. Fine. I've made all my changes - back to the queue it goes. (So, maybe 8 days later, it'll come out again.)

I'm super annoyed.

Anyway, if you are reading, I've updated House of Pain to include the full Chapter 6. Enjoy! (Leave me a comment if you do read it, I'd love to know what you think!)

Wednesday...

It's been a busy couple of days for me; and work has stalled a bit on the House of Pain. I'm painfully close to the end. The word count is 30,068 words (am I the only one that judges progress by word count?). I'm thinking this one will finish up at 40,000 words or thereabouts. I wrote some notes yesterday about threads I've started in the story that need to be woven in; I've an idea for the epilogue that I love; and there are a couple of bits in the middle of the story that I need to go back and fill in.

The bits that need filling in are mostly the sex scenes. Hilarious though it must seem, given I write erotica, I find writing sex scenes incredibly hard. As a reader, description bores me, I'm much more interested in plot and dialogue. And sex scenes are mostly description. The way he feels; the way he smells; the corresponding needs in her; and so on. Solidly, the hardest writing I do.

So, House of Pain's storyline is evolving quite nicely, and I have a lot of sex scenes to fill in. That's the summary of where I'm at.

I wrote a little bit of a snippet for Writing Prompt Wednesday as a way to distract myself. Canadian Thanksgiving is long gone, but for the Americans, Thanksgiving is in the air. The phrase to include was - What a turkey.

Here's my bit, with some creative licence taken in the punctuation of that phrase...

“What, a turkey?”

Jason grins at me. “You’ve never made one before?”

I roll my eyes at him. My skills in the kitchen are, well, non-existent.

“I’ll do most of the work,” he promises me, his gorgeous brown eyes filled with laughter. “We’ve got to have turkey for Thanksgiving.”

In the kitchen, he moves behind me. Dangerously close; the kind of close where I can feel the heat emanate from him, smell his intoxicating mix of aftershave and soap. I close my eyes for an instant. Yes, we have both our parents coming over for Thanksgiving dinner, and yes, it’ll be the first time we are hosting, but suddenly, I just want to lean into my handsome husband’s body, and be taken by him.

I turn towards him. He can see the heat in my eyes as I ignore the turkey on the counter; the bags of groceries all over the place, the pie baking in the oven.

An answering heat blazes in his eyes. “Jess…” he mutters. He leans into me, kisses my neck, the stubble on his face grazing against my soft flesh, sending little tremors of lust coursing through my body. “Baby, we’ve got a ton of work to do…”

But I ignore the cooking; I pull my breasts out from the tank-top I’m wearing. His eyes darken as he sees me holding my breasts in my hands, pushing them together and offering them to him. “Jason…” I beg, “I want to feel your stubble against my nipples…”

Doug’s fallen asleep next to me. I lie quietly, not wanting to disturb him.

Instead, I try to process the sex.

Not what I expected. That’s the first thought that pops through my head, and I explore that, trying to understand exactly what I had thought this encounter would be like. “I thought there’d be more ordering around…” I’ve read a thousand BDSM stories, seen a thousand BDSM videos. Chapter 5

I expect a sinister basement; damp, dim, forbidding. Doug’s dungeon isn’t any of these things.

The St. Andrews Cross in a corner does look intimidating. And the ceiling is criss-crossed with visible metal beams, some with chains hanging down. But aside from these things? The room is, like the upstairs, warm. There are windows set high in the walls, looking onto the backyard, and through this, beams of sunlight come streaming down. The floor is tiled, with throw rugs spread across; shades of red and oranges everywhere again. There’s a bed in the room; a comfortable looking king-size bed – made with pristine white sheets, and a white throw on top. I pause; look around; take it in.
